LIAM Sayers insists Dorchester Town were his first choice club after signing for the county town side last week.

The Bridport-born player has spent pre-season with the Magpies after being released by Portsmouth at the end of last season.

Sayers spent time on loan at the Avenue in the last campaign and he is thrilled to be back.

He told Echosport: “I wanted to commit early in pre-season but they (the management) didn’t know who was going to be in the squad so it took a while but I’m glad to have signed now.

“It’s a great platform to show yourself, look what happened to Jonah (Ayunga) who is now playing for a professional club.

“I want to be back there and this is the best place for me to be.”

Sayers did play in the exit trials, organised for young players to show their worth to clubs, however, that didn’t work.

He added: “Nothing happened from that, but I spoke to the coaches (at Portsmouth) and they said this (Dorchester Town) was the best place. It’s a really tight squad.

“All of the young players have come in and settled well, which has helped.

“I want to play regularly and score goals.

“I want to do well and hopefully become the main man up front for the side.

“I think I can score 20 goals this season, why not?”
