DORCHESTER Town defender Gary Bowles has spoke of how he and midfielder Jon Vance encouraged match-winner Phil Ormrod to join the club.

Ormrod, who signed on Tuesday from Gillingham Town, scored an 85th minute winner against Hayes & Yeading, and Bowles has spoken of how pleased he was with his friend’s impact.

He said: “I was buzzing for Phil to come in on his debut and get the winning goal.

“Me and Jon (Vance) know him and once we heard Dorchester were interested we spoke to him and straight away he was keen to come.

We had a bit of an impact but I don’t want to take all the credit!

“He’s just a big presence up front, with his pace and his power, and you could see he has an eye for goal. So he’s exactly what we needed at this time.”

Bowles was in the stands for Tuesday’s victory over Hayes as he recovers from a fractured ankle, and said just how disappointed he was to pick up the injury.

He said: “I was absolutely gutted. I was buzzing to be back at the club and I think it was 33 minutes into my return and it felt like I was back to square one again, but that’s football.

“But it’s a lot better now. It wasn’t as bad as we first thought but it’s still going to be a couple more weeks until I’m back because there’s still a lot of stiffness and bruising in there.

“The boot is going to come off in the next couple of days, and I’ve been doing a bit of cycling to keep my legs ticking over. I think next week I should be running on grass so hopefully it won’t be too long until I’m back available, but if it was up to me I’d be playing on Saturday!”

But despite not being involved on Tuesday, Bowles is keen for his team-mates to keep their feet on the ground ahead of Saturday’s clash with Kings Langley.

He said: “Tuesday was a big win but it’s gone now so we have to focus on Saturday, and make sure we approach the game like we did against Hayes and not get ahead of ourselves.”
