DORCHESTER Town boss Craig Laird was left frustrated by his side’s wastefulness in front of goal as Bideford ran out 2-1 winners at the Avenue.

Goals from Nick Barker and Dan Western either side of a fine David Jerrard strike gave the Devon outfit a win against higher-level opposition, with Laird bemoaning a lack of ruthlessness up top.

He told Echosport: “Our quality was a lot better than it was on Saturday. We really should have scored a couple of goals and the difference between the two sides was that they took their chances and we didn’t. We had three or four really good chances to score and didn’t.

“We’re sloppy in both 18-yard boxes. We’re not good enough at the moment and that’s something we need to improve.”

After a bright opening spell by Bideford, one rung below the Magpies in the Southern League South & West Division, Dorchester came into the game as the lively Ed Bastick and Neil Martin frequently combined on the left.

Dorchester began to exert more control on the game and should have scored when skipper Gary Bowles shot wide from 15 yards after evading a covering defender.

Shortly after the break, following a good save by Steve Oliver from Jerrard, Bideford scored.

A fortuitous bounce fell to Nick Barker in the area and he calmly slot ted home past Chris Weale on 61 minutes.

It took just two minutes for the Magpies to equalise when a surging run from substitute Billy Lowes was finished off by Jerrard, who slammed home into the top-right corner from 20 yards.

Phil Ormrod, Tom Blair and Kyle Egan all wasted good opportunities late on before Western slammed home the winner from 20 yards in the 90th minute.
