DORCHESTER Town striker Phil Ormrod admitted he was “over the moon” to have played his part in the Magpies’ 2-1 Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round win over Basingstoke Town.
Ormrod sat out the first half on the bench but a hamstring injury to New Zealand international Rory Fallon gave Ormrod his chance and he duly struck twice to set up a tie with either Tonbridge Angels or Heybridge Swifts.
Speaking after the game, Ormrod was pleased to put the frustration of starting on the bench behind him.
He said: “I’m delighted. I started on the bench so I was a little bit disappointed with that, but to come on and get the goals I’m over the moon. I couldn’t be happier.
“(Steve Thompson, manager) wanted to sharpen things up and I think we did that in the second half. Rory had a tight hammy so I got my chance and thankfully got the goals.”
Talking through his strikes, Ormrod spoke of his confidence after scoring the first from Sam Lanahan’s pass.
He said: “It was a great cross and thankfully I was in the right place at the right time and tucked it away, so I’m happy with that.
“I had a bit of confidence scoring the first goal and it’s been a while since I got a goal so I was more than happy to take the pen.”
Ormrod had a couple of late chances to complete his hat-trick but he felt the win was of more significance.
He said: “I’m not sure who crossed it in, I think it was a Kyle (Egan) cross and I got something on it, but the keeper made the save.
“I wasn’t bothered about the third I was just happy we got the win. It’s been a long time since I got a goal so I’ve deserved one.”
And Ormrod is eager to continue the club’s run, revealing that manager Steve Thompson is keen to go as far as possible.
He said: “I’m not sure how many rounds we’d have to play to get to Wembley. We may get a big team in a few rounds or so, so it’s nice to stay in it. The manager wants us to stay in it so he’s chuffed and we’re all really happy with the result.”
