DORCHESTER Town midfielder Sam Lanahan admitted scoring a stoppage-time winner was the “best way” to secure three points.

Lanahan’s header, from a Tom Blair run and cross, came in the 93rd-minute to sneak a 2-1 Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division win over Biggleswade Town at the Avenue Stadium.

Speaking to Echosport after the victory, which completed the Magpies’ first back-to-back home wins of the season, Lanahan said: “It’s always nice to win and that’s the best way as an individual to get a goal at the end.

“The main thing is that we’ve won, so happy days.”

Talking through the move that led to his goal, Lanahan praised the impact of substitute Blair, who came on in the 86th-minute.

He said: “It was a great substitution really because we hadn’t had many crosses in the game. Mo (Baghdadi) played well and the other winger (Aaron Rodriguez) played well before.

“They’re quite a different style of player whereas Tom likes to just beat the defender and put a cross in so I knew I was more likely to get a cross from him so it was nice to finish one off.”

Despite having scored twice with his head at Farnborough, Lanahan was modest on reflection, preferring to laud Blair’s crossing ability after the winger also assisted one of his goals at Boro.

He said: “I’m not sure I get up in the air very well but I just get in the box as much as I can and try and get a lot of goals.

“Again, that was Tom, so it’s nice to build up a link with another player.”

With boss Steve Thompson less than satisfied with Dorchester's performance in a “physical” game, although winning, Lanahan felt the result against the Waders might have been different had it been earlier in the season.

“A few months ago we’d have lost that game,100 per cent. To say that we’re not playing well and winning, it’s completely different as we were playing well and losing.

“There’s a few knocks. I’ve got a dead leg from the first half but I’m sure a few of the lads have picked up a few knocks because it was quite a physical game and the pitch wasn’t ideal – but we got the win,” he said.
