DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson admitted the Magpies’ 1-1 Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division draw at Biggleswade Town’s Langford Road was a “fair result”.

Thompson’s men were subjected to a heavy assault on their goal midway through the first half as the Waders created four chances in five minutes, finishing the last of them through Connor Hall’s strike to punish a defensive error.

But Dorchester replied strongly and saw Antonio Diaz test home keeper Patrick Sinfield before Dom Panesar-Dower fed Ash Pope who bent a shot into the top corner six minutes before the break.

Biggleswade had the best moment of a poor second half when Robbie Parker’s fierce effort hit the bar, but both sides settled for a point to close out their 2017/18 campaigns.

Speaking to Echosport following the draw, Thompson rued his side’s lack of a final ball.

He said: “It wasn’t the best game, but the conditions were almost like February – wet and cold.

“A draw was probably a fair result. We didn’t play as well as we have done but we deserved a point.

“It was a mistake for the (Biggleswade) goal but these things happen. They probably in terms of chances edged the first half.”

But the Magpies’ manager was pleased with his side’s response thereafter.

He said: “We had a good chance from Ollie Griggs and then Aaron Rodriguez didn’t get the shot off. We got into great positions and should’ve scored, we just couldn’t find the final ball.

“The equaliser was a great goal, well-worked, a great team move before Ash put it in. Dom did pretty well and it’s encouraging that we’re now picking up points away from home.”

Asked what lies in store for both his squad and himself over the next few weeks, Thompson admitted a break and discussion over their futures were the most pressing issues.

He said: “The players will have a rest now and I’ve got to talk to quite a few of them. We have our end of season presentation and I’ll be calling players and finding out to see if we can get a few more in for pre-season.

“Players tend to want a lot more money in May than they do in July, that’s just the way it is in football. They start to worry that they won’t have a club for the season because there’s only so few places.

“I always enjoy May and June because it’s a chance to refresh and get on with things. I’m looking forward to a couple of months away from football but it soon starts again.

“You can’t totally switch off because you have to be speaking to players that may be available.”

Thompson also refused to rule out signing Gary Bowles, for next season, the defender having not played for the Magpies for several weeks.

He said: “I don’t know whether he will be available or whether I will want him. It was obviously too late for him to go anywhere else. It’s by no means certain he’ll be at Dorchester.

“It’s very important to have a club of players and management working in the same direction, but I never rule out much in football.”

Meanwhile, Dorchester Town Reserves continue their Wyvern Midweek Combination League campaign tonight (7.45pm) against Poole Town at the Avenue Stadium.

Rich Robson’s men currently sit in fourth, five points behind the Dolphins.
