EDDIE Mitchell could be set to step down as chairman of Dorchester Town due to his links with the Murry Group and their proposed takeover of AFC Bournemouth.

The property developer declined to comment on the issue but Echosport understands that he is part of the Murry Group, with Adam Murry, who is spearheading the consortium, now the hot favourite to be unveiled as the Cherries’ new owner within the next few days.

AFC Bournemouth co-owner Paul Baker, who has been trying to sell his stake in the Dean Court outfit since February, confirmed on Wednesday night that a deal had been “transacted” subject to legal work being completed.

However, Baker chose to keep the identity of the new owner under wraps as part of a confidentiality agreement.

Mitchell has flirted with a possible takeover of AFC Bournemouth in the past. The county town chairman admitted an interest in the East Dorset club back in February 2008 but the consortium he was involved in lost out two months later with Marc Jackson being the successful bidder.

Now though, Mitchell has joined forces with Murry, Jeff Mostyn and Steve Sly to form the Murry Group.

It is believed that, should the deal go through without any last-minute hitches, then Mitchell, who became the majority shareholder at the Jewson Stadium two years ago, would have to relinquish his position as the Magpies’ chairman due to a conflict of interests.

However, he could still provide financial backing for the Magpies.
