No let-up for Coutts

DORCHESTER Town cannot afford to take their foot off the gas, according to James Coutts.

The Magpies enter this afternoon’s home match against Brom-ley (3pm) with a four-game unbeaten run under their belts.

And midfielder Coutts, who has made four appearances in Dorch-ester colours since joining last month, is keen to maintain that momentum.

The 22-year-old said: “Results have been going well since I joined. That’s not down to me, it’s the fact that everyone’s pulling in the right direction.

“Against Staines we came back from 2-0 down to draw. That showed great character and we’ve built from that result.

“Against Lewes we had enough chances to win a few games but we then went and put in a great performance at Weston-super-Mare and deserved the win, and likewise against Thurrock on Tuesday.

“We want the run to continue because a couple of bad performances could see us sucked back into a relegation fight, so we can’t afford to take our foot off the pedal.

“The main goal has been making sure we are in the same division for next season. We want to get as many wins as we can and we want to head towards mid-table, but survival is the main objective.”

Coutts was often used as a winger during his time at rivals Weymouth but has slotted into a more central role at the Jewson Stadium.

And the former Terra is enjoying life in the middle of the park.

He added: “My natural position is in the middle and what helped me last season was Bobby Gould, when he was in charge of Weymouth, telling me he saw me as a central midfielder.

“I’ve always felt I could do a job there. Bobby gave me my chance there and so has Ashley Vickers.”

Of his new partnership with fellow midfield man Mark Jermyn, Coutts said: “In every part of the field you need people who compliment each other. Kevin Hill and Nathan Walker do that in defence and so do myself and Jem in midfield.”

Kevin Hill, who himself only returned to action last weekend after a lengthy spell on the treatment table, has paid tribute to his defensive partner.

The skipper said: “We’ve had two clean sheets since I’ve been back but I have to say that Nathan Walker has been outstanding. In fact, he helped me through the game at Weston last Saturday.

“He’s come on leaps and bounds and has done really well since joining the club.

“He’s no-nonsense, he’s only a young lad but he is always asking me if he has done okay.

“I’ve given him plenty of encouragement and on Tuesday he was superb again.”
