NEW recruit Scott Brice has set his sights on earning a permanent contract with Dorchester Town.
The towering centre-half joined the Magpies on Monday evening alongside fellow ex-Terra Josh Llewellyn – just 48 hours after their release from rivals Weymouth – and made his Dorchester debut as a second-half substitute in Tuesday night’s 2-1 win at Hampton & Richmond.
However, the 23-year-old has only signed on non-contract terms and is therefore keen to showcase his talents in a bid to land a more secure deal.
Reflecting on his move to the county town outfit, Brice said: “So much has gone on at Weymouth this season. The chairman wants to save money and I can’t knock him for that.
“Josh and I have gone to Dorchester to further our careers, not because we want more money.
“The deal at Dorchester is not the same as it was at Weymouth but it’ll do for now. I’m on non-contract so in the last eight games of the season I’m looking to show Ashley Vickers that I’m worthy of a better deal.
“I had offers from Truro and some other clubs in the league below and if I was only interested in the money then I would’ve gone to Truro. But I want to play at the highest level possible.
“Ash said he wanted competition for places and if you play well when you get a chance then you will keep the shirt.
“The other lads said I did well on Tuesday night so hopefully I’ve given Ash something to think about for Saturday’s game at Braintree.”
The Magpies were sitting pretty on Tuesday night with a 2-0 scoreline in their favour at half-time, but a second-half dismissal for Matt Groves and a goal from home forward Ian Hodges threw a spanner in the works.
However, Brice came off the bench to play his part in keeping the Beavers at bay.
He added: “It was a good game to be involved in. No one expects to go into a new team and start straight away but I got given an opportunity after Hampton scored and when we were down to 10 men.
“I think Ash wanted to strengthen up in defence a bit because they were playing a lot of route one football.
“I went in alongside Nathan Walker, we both got on well and we communicated well too. It was nice to get a win, to see Josh score and to also come on myself.”
Brice, who played under three different managers during his eight months with the Terras, paid tribute to his new boss Ashley Vickers, saying: “Ash is a good character and very much my type of manager.
“He’ll shout at you if need be but he’ll also be the first one to give you praise when you deserve it.
“There are similarities between him and Ian Hutch-inson as they both concentrate on instilling the right work ethic.”
Brice is now the fourth member of the Dorchester squad to have previously captained rivals Weymouth – Vickers, James Coutts and Kyle Critchell being the others.
Meanwhile, chairman Shaun Hearn is confident the Magpies can prosper next season.
He said: “Tuesday night’s game was hard-fought, we were under the cosh in the second half but we got there in the end. I think we’ll be a force to be reckoned with next year.”
Hearn also revealed there have been no further developments regarding the ongoing legal issues with former majority shareholder Eddie Mitchell.
