PHIL Simkin is being forced to play the waiting game in his quest for new signings.

The Magpies’ manager has three targets on his summer shopping list but with two of them out of the country, Simkin must await their return before pressing on with negotiations.

The Dorchester Town boss said: “I have met with a striker and he is now on holiday. Another target is also now on holiday so I will be speaking to both of them again when they get back.

“I have three targets in mind but we certainly can’t afford to take all three. If we could get one I would be delighted and if we could afford two I would be over the moon.

“It’s at a bit of an impasse at the moment but I’m still confident of getting one of them. It all depends on finance.”

Meanwhile, hopes of securing another loan deal for Exeter City youngster Tom Nichols appear somewhat bleak.

The 18-year-old, who has penned a new one-year deal with the Grecians, was the Magpies’ leading scorer last season with nine goals in a dozen appearances.

But with fellow forwards Daniel Nardiello and Richard Logan both leaving the Devon club, Simkin expects Nichols to play a more pivotal role at St James’ Park next term.

He added: “I see Exeter have released some players and it looks like Tom will be very much in the frame for them next season.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start in League Two next season but it’s something we are keeping an eye on.”
