FAMILIES and children embraced the Olympic spirit in an afternoon of fun and games.

Staff, parents and youngsters of Radipole Pre-school took part in their very own Olympic Games.

Everyone got involved after holding a creative opening ceremony with a warm-up dance lead by Abbie from Dorchester-based dance school Hot Steps.

Youngsters took part in running, jumping and bean bag races as well as a backwards race and a special family Olympic challenge.

The winning children, aged between three and four, were awarded a special Olympic-themed medal.

Victoria Owen-Smith, chairman of Radipole Pre-school committee, helped organise the event.

She said: “We are a non-profit making pre-school with a charity status and our sports day is a great opportunity to fundraise not just for ourselves but for others.”

This year money raised from the event will go towards Julia’s House Children’s Hospice and Cancer Care for Children.

She added: “The children took part in four sponsored races and a family Olympic torch race.

“We decided on an Olympic theme to get the children geared up for the Games.

“We enjoyed having cake and drinks and there was also a raffle with prizes kindly donated from 80 regional and local businesses and individuals.

“Our sports medals have been kindly designed and produced by Park Precision Ltd and donated to us for the children to keep.”

Dance teacher Abbie, of Hot Steps, said: “It has been a really fun day with all the children. I’ve been teaching them a jazz routine and they loved it.”

Denise Jarvis, manager of Radipole Pre-School, said: “We want to thank all the parents and staff who attended for supporting the children and raising funds.”

After a short break it was soon time for parents and grandparents to battle it out in front of scores of excited youngsters.

Money raised will also benefit Radipole Pre-school with their summer outing.

Proud children held up their Bring on the Games sticker after their afternoon of fun held on Redlands Community Sports Hub playing field.
