Daryl Jacob has been announced as the new rider of Colin Tizzard’s multiple Grade One-winning chaser Cue Card from the start of next season proper.

The trainer’s son Joe has been ever-present in the saddle during the eight-year-old’s 20-race career so far, with his victories including the 2010 Champion Bumper, the Ryanair Chase and the Betfair Chase in 2013.

However, Tizzard called time on his riding career at the end of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, meaning a new jockey was required for the stable star.

Joe Tizzard, who now acts as assistant to his father at Milborne Port, Sherborne, said: “The decision was made by Bob and Jean Bishop (owners) that Daryl will ride Cue Card and all the horses they own. They have five horses in training at the moment.

“Daryl became available, he’s a big-race jockey with lots of experience and he’s the right man for the job.''

Cue Card was last seen filling the runner-up spot in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, having missed the end of the last campaign after suffering a stress fracture to his pelvis, but is reported to be recovering well.

''He's in the field and he looks fabulous,'' said Tizzard.

''The plan is for him to come back in on August 1 as normal and he'll resume normal training.

''I knew when I retired Cue Card would be the toughest one to watch (from the sidelines), but there are no question marks over the decision.

''I look forward to being a big part of the rest of his career. I'll ride him out plenty at home and give Daryl as much help as I can.''

Jacob, who has not ridden competitively since suffering a broken leg, knee and elbow after a nasty fall from Port Melon prior to the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, is thrilled to have been given the call.

He said: ''I am very much looking forward to riding for Mr and Mrs Bishop and the Tizzard family. I go back a long way with the Tizzards from the point-to-point days and they're great people.

''To get the ride on one of the best staying chasers in Britain and Ireland is fantastic and Mr and Mrs Bishop have also got some very nice young horses I'm looking forward to bringing through as well.

''It's just a really exciting opportunity and I can't wait to get started again.

''I'm going to see the physio again on Monday and we'll just take things step by step, but I'm feeling really good at the moment and everything is coming together.

''I'm riding out plenty at Mr (Ralph) Beckett's and I also want to thank Wincanton Sports Centre, who have been great and really helped with my rehabilitation.''
