SEVENTEEN members of Lyme Regis SAC took to the water to fish a boat match where the target was the best ‘brace of plaice’.

The weather was perfect, with the water clearing, sunshine and a light breeze.

Although plaice was the target fish, several other species were caught including dab, dogfish, smoothound, tub gurnard and pollack. Roy Shipwey, fishing aboard the Alice Rose, took top honours with his double totalling 1,604gms.

Andy Sheader, Paul Blake and Darren Herbert claimed second, third and fourth places respectively. The Alice Rose was top boat on the day.

SUMMER SPECIES

BREAM are being caught in the east towards Lulworth with a spattering on and around the shambles mussel beds and ledges.

This tenacious fish is giving good sport on light gear.

Some high quality plaice have also been caught along the mussels beds south of Portland, with fish from 2.5lb to 5lb plus.

The favoured bait is a mixture of ragworm and squid.

Most bass are landing to live sandeel and mackerel baits with both Godnor and the ledges off Portland proving fruitful.

We see large cod off the coast of Dorset in the summer as they come inshore to feed on sandeel and bait fish.

Reports are already coming in of cod up to 20lb, so the season is looking good.

For those anglers who like to go afloat to practice their fishing, there are plenty of challenges to be had, especially fishing on light gear, with tope to 50lb in some fine spots off Portland, and both rays and smoothound to add into the mix.
