WEYMOUTH’S Michael Watson clinched his 11th win of a fantastic season when he shared first place with three others in the Oake Manor Pro-Am, writes Peter Godsiff.

Watson’s performance represented a return to top form for the Wessex Golf Centre pro, as his previous victory had come more than a month earlier.

And it was hard to find fault with Watson’s round of 65 – he didn’t drop a shot on his way to a quarter share of more than £2,000.

A birdie on the second was followed by another on the ninth to complete an outward half of 33, before three more birdies on holes 12, 15 and 17 brought Watson home in 32.

Ryder Cup winner Phillip Price was a late entrant for the event but the Welshman was certainly a strong finisher.

The final man on the course made a decisive eagle at the 476-yard par-five 15th to move to five-under-par, putting him level with Watson, Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton) and Kevin Harper (Sidmouth) at the top of the leaderboard.

David Dixon (Enmore Park) had a great chance to upstage the rest of the field but marred a superb start when he took seven on the 15th.

But, typically for a player who has dominated many West Region events this year, he ended his round in style with three successive birdies to finish one shot behind the leaders.

Watson’s Weymouth trio of Rob Price, Tony Smith and John Sharp won the team section on 21-under-par (119), two better than Dixon’s Somerset group.
