BRIDPORT cyclist Calum Croft romped to victory in his first ever hill climb, setting a new course record at the CC Weymouth event on Portland in the process.

The 25-year-old Mud, Sweat ’n Gears rider completed the 1.3-mile climb in four minutes 32 seconds to finish first out of nearly 70 competitors.

He pipped James Horton of Cann-ondale Racing by eight seconds with Bournemouth Jubilee’s Simon Mc-Laughlin in third place.

The event, which saw riders set off from the start at minute intervals, was the second in a series of four organised by clubs from across Dorset.

Croft wasn’t involved in the first race and won’t be taking part in the remaining two, opting instead to prepare for upcoming cyclocross races.

“I’ve been a bit glum since illness brought about an enforced end to my road racing season in August, but my club were really kind and keen for me to give this a go,” said Croft.

“It’s a real boost to win, especially on my first ever hill climb event.

“It’s not quite like mass start road racing, there are less tactics involved in winning.

“But it’s got a nice bit of history and it’s the same course for everyone each year, so it’s great to add my name to the list of winners and hold the record, at least for the time being.”
