A STUNNING final-day performance saw the England senior team crowned world boat champions.

Colin Searles, Ray Barron, Gary Galbraith, Rolf Marschalek, Cliff Newbold and Mark Smith stormed to victory in Weymouth.

France finished second and Italy took third place at the end of the three-day event.

“The lads are elated,” said England team manager Neil Bryant. “It was an amazing performance on the last day.

“We knew we had to up our game if we wanted to win and the guys did just that.”

France’s Mathieu Hervouet claimed the individual title at the FIPS-M World Boat Championships, while Searles was runner-up.

In the under-21 section, England, including Weymouth trio Ryan Casey, Aaron Comben and Jordan Davis, were just edged out of second place by France.

They had to settle for the bronze medal after count-back as Italy cruised to victory.

Italian star Anthony Giacomini, winner of the European senior title just last month, claimed the under-21 individual crown with England’s Davis in third.
