DORCHESTER & District ABC’s Sol Gilday-Evans set the Senior Novice Championships in Swindon alight with a technical knockout victory over Daniel Barode.

A furious first round saw Gilday-Evans consistently landing sharp jabs on his opponent from Fisher ABC, who went into the contest with a superb record.

The unwavering concentration and speed of the county town boxer gave Barode plenty to think about, though the latter did fight back with some flying punches.

Gilday-Evans had success at the start of the second round, imposing his auth-ority with a couple of classy shots, but Barode kept swinging away to keep his rival at bay.

Suddenly there were screams of pain coming from Barode as he collapsed to the canvas. The doctor at ringside doctor leapt into action, popping Bar-ode’s dislocated shoulder back into place.

Barode desperately wanted to continue but the doctor refused, giving Gilday-Evans the win via a technical knockout.

“I am very sorry for my opponent,” said the Dorchester fighter. “The freak accident wasn’t the way I’d liked to receive the winning decision.”

Gilday-Evans now has to negotiate his way past Tashinga Much-apondwa in the quarter-finals in London on October 18.

Meanwhile, Wessex ABC held their first tournament of the season, and what a precedent it left for other clubs to follow.

Dorchester’s Joshua Bennett put up a titanic effort but couldn’t get the better of Ronan Kalinski as both made their debuts.

Kalinski had to bump and bore his way to a points victory, though it didn’t come easy as Bennett chased and punched well.

Bennett’s club-mate Angus Dunn narrowly beat Jesse Boyle (Bridport) on points.

The first round saw both boxers testing the water and keeping each other at bay with a few sharp jabs. Boyle went for a quick finish in the second, but Dunn was rewarded for his patience when a sharp jab froze his opponent in his tracks.

The Bridport boxer went on the attack in the third and may well have come out on top had it not been for Dunn’s ability to weather the storm with some solid blows.

Dorchester head coach Ben Geyser said: “Joshua was proving to be a nuisance to Ronan and if he keeps working at his fitness and boxing he will be hard to beat.

“Angus boxed exceptionally well against a good Bridport boxer and he deserved the decision.”
