WEYMOUTH 1 HAVANT 3

WEYMOUTH’S fine run of form finally came to an end when they beaten by Havant at Redlands. The Seasiders dominated in the first half and led at the break but Havant capitalised on almost every chance in the second and came out 3-1 winners.

The hosts fielded a strong team with Matthew Metcalfe returning to left-back. Forward Andy Stiles re-mained injured from the previous game at Aldershot and was replaced by Aaron Wilkinson who made his first appearance for the senior side this season.

Weymouth dominated possession in Havant’s half of the pitch for much of the first half but could only score once despite several good chances. The ball was played out to the right to captain Simon Harvey and he hit it into the circle from wide on the 23-metre line.

Midfielder Samuel Drewitt got on the receiving end near to the penalty spot and deflected the ball at pace into the top-right corner of the goal.

Havant actually got the ball into the Weymouth net in the first half, but after an umpires’ conference the ball was correctly identified as having hit the scorer’s foot moments before.

The visitors scored the equaliser early in the second half from a penalty corner.

Centre-back Matthew Underhill charged down the hitter and got stick on ball, but only enough to deflect the strike into the top-right corner of his own goal.

Their second goal came from open play. Keeper David Civil forced the Havant forward wide to the baseline but he managed to get his shot on target from the narrow angle with enough height to beat Underhill on the goal line.

The third then came from another penalty corner.

The initial strike was saved by Civil but his defence was not quick enough to pounce on the rebound and it was struck into the corner by a well placed Havant forward.

The visitors went down to 10 men for the last five minutes of the game due to one of their forwards being sin-binned for a late challenge on Harvey. Unfortunately, although Wey-mouth mounted sustained pressure during this period, they were unable to convert any chances and salvage any points from the game.

Weymouth now sit mid-table with three wins and three losses. They travel to second bottom Blandford & Sturminster this Saturday and hope to return to winning ways.
