THE sixth-formers of Budmouth A got back to winning ways in Division One after two consecutive defeats.

The task was made slightly easier against Red Triangle given that they could only manage to put out two players for the match.

This meant Budmouth automatically had a 9-0 start before the match even started and Tom Cherry soon made that 12-1 before Tony Reed hit back with a win over Lily Cherry.

Lily Cherry then beat Mick Spracklen before Budmouth’s Sam Millar won two legs against Reed and Mick Spracklen to make the match safe.

Red Triangle finished strongly with Reed beating Tom Cherry and then partnering Spracklen to victory in the doubles but the initial deficit proved crucial.

YMCA notched up their second win of the season in a closely-contested match with Shipton Gorge A.

In a match where all six players won at least one singles leg each, this one went down to the final doubles contest.

Jon Cox starred for YMCA, winning all three of his singles matches.

He did it the hard way though as all were gruelling five-setters and he also had to come from 2-1 down in all three of them including a 13-11 fifth set win over Miranda Edwardes.

Going into the doubles, Shipton Gorge needed a 3-0 win to draw the match but Cox teamed up with Ken Brake to yet another five-set win over Edwardes and her partner Gil Roberts after once again coming from 2-1 down.

On the face of it, the other match in Division One saw Wyke M score a more comfortable win over Colliton X.

John Ryan registered wins in all of his singles matches for Wyke M and also the closing doubles with David Avenell.

However, the scoreline, flattered Wyke a little with all but three of the legs going to four or five sets but they got the better of a majority of them to run out 27-12 winners.

In a full week of fixtures in Division Two there were wins for Budmouth’s B and C teams, Colliton C and Shipton Gorge B.

Budmouth B’s 23-15 victory was nip and tuck for the first half of the match but turned when Ben Graham beat Derek Shilliday 3-0 and Brad Burroughs followed that up by sneaking a 13-11 fifth set victory over Roger Lovell.

Simon Green then beat Graham’s dad, Daren, before Bur-roughs and Gra-ham rounded the win off by overcoming Shilliday and Green in the final doubles leg.

Once again, the scoreline in Budmouth C’s win over Springfield A does not really reflect the competiveness of the match.

Both Jamie Blair and Moses Lewis won their three singles matches with James Green chipping in with two for the in-form youngsters.

Lewis came from two sets down to overcome Steve Rook in five sets and Green’s only loss was to the same opponent, also to the same 3-2 scoreline.

Rook then overcame Green again and got a little revenge on Lewis by teaming up with Pete Anderson to win the doubles but Budmouth were already out of site and ran out 26-15 winners.

The table says that Colliton C and Preston C have played the same amount matches and are on the same amount of points but it was Colliton that emerged 24-14 winners in the contest between them this week.

Peter Loakes scored two 3-1 and a 3-0 win in his singles matches to give Colliton the edge.

Dave Glan-ville won two of his matches, losing only to Loakes, for Preston plus the doubles with Dave Clegg, to give him a good personal total for the evening.

Ultimately it was not enough to keep Preston in the match though as Colliton drew level with them in the league.

Division Two’s final match saw Brian Cammell lead Shipton Gorge B to victory over Preston B.

He won all three of his singles legs and was ably supported by his two partners, Peter Billing-ham and Graham Albertella, who both won two of theirs for a 24-14 win.

The week’s closest match was out in Shipton Gorge where their C team lost out 20-19 to table-topping Wyke D.

This was an absolute cracker with the scores being tied at 17-all going in to the deciding doubles rubber.

The first six legs were shared before Dan Corren and Graham Robertson of Shipton Gorge beat Rod Wyness and Roger Walden respectively to give them a 17-14 lead with one singles and the doubles leg to be played.

Tony Dobbs then beat Tom Baldry 3-0 to level the tie and leave it tantalisingly balanced.

Fittingly the doubles went the distance with Walden and Dobbs digging out a 3-2 win over Corren and Robertson to seal victory.

The only other match in Division Three gave Budmouth E a 24-10 win over Dorset Youth Service B.

April Heasman and Snigdha Maganti both won their three singles matches and also paired up for a doubles win with Erin Stow also winning her opening leg against Mick Hogben.

Martin Singer and Richard Wood scored the Youth Service’s only leg wins on a night dominated by the young ladies of Budmouth.
