ENGLAND international Matt Ware will be the special guest when the Weymouth & District League hosts an open day at All Saints School on Saturday.

As well as taking on new coaching roles in Dorset, Ware is still playing at the top level on the British Grand Prix circuit.

He currently lies second in the individual event and top of the doubles standings.

Ware has been working with the Weymouth youth set-up since last September and the results have shown that the extra training is paying off.

Budmouth won the Dorset schools’ team events at boys’ under-13 and 19 levels, and in the girls’ under-16 age group, all of which represents real strength in depth.

The Weymouth & District League is now keen to introduce the sport to as many adults as possible and the open event is the first in a series of initiatives to make use of some of the excellent facilities in the town.

League development officer Andy Millar said: “The youth side is going from strength to strength and we are now working towards a breakthrough at national level.

“There are also a growing number of adults telling us they want to play table tennis but aren’t sure where to start or just want to play for fun and not in the league.

“We are looking to provide opportunities for complete beginners or those returning to the game. There are lots of clubs around the Weymouth area that cater for all abilities and who we can put players in touch with.”

The event at All Saints School is open to players of all ages from primary school children through to adults.

The hall will be available for anyone to play with friends and family or get advice from one of the coaches – the league ‘robot’ will also be set up to take on.

There is an introduction for primary school players from 10am and older youth players and adults from 11am.

A youth matchplay tournament for new and existing players starts at noon.

Players can arrive any time from 10am, the event runs until 2pm and the cost is just £1.
