WEYMOUTH 3 GOSPORT 1

WEYMOUTH did the double on league strugglers Gosport, this time with a 3-1 win at home that keeps them fourth in the league.

Daniel Bowles filled in at centre-back to replace injured Michael Westlake, while Aaron Wilkinson came back into the side to bolster the attack.

Captain Simon Harvey opened the scoring for the hosts after an initial stalemate throughout the first 15 minutes with his goal coming from a penalty corner.

Patrick May’s dragflick was saved by the Gosport keeper but Harvey pounced on the high rebound near the left post.

The visitors appealed for an over the shoulder contact but the goal stood.

Gosport came back with a goal of their own shortly before half-time after a few unlucky deflections landed the ball on a forward’s stick making him well placed to beat keeper David Civil. The visitors managed fairly few chances throughout the rest of game and Civil was on hand at each opportunity to deny them.

At half-time, the tied scoreline gave the Seasiders no cause for concern. Their previous game was goalless at the break but they went on to win 3-1 as superior fitness came through in the second half. They expected the same to be the case against Gosport.

Sure enough goals from forwards Luke Drewitt and Chris Fry sealed the win. Drewitt’s goal was a fine deflection assisted by Daniel Bowles on a run out of defence, while Fry scored in trademark fashion poaching near the goalmouth.

Weymouth will surely face a sterner test today away at mid-table Trojans. As well as the higher-ranked opposition they will be again be without the injured Westlake but also key players Matt Lawes and Bowles, offering an opportunity for some less experienced players to shine.
