IN a relatively quiet week for the Weymouth & District League there were two clashes for titlechasers Wyke A, as they fought out two close encounters on consecutive nights.

First, they faced Budmouth A and managed to grind out a narrow 24-19 victory.

This was a great tie with all but one of the 10 matches going to either four or five sets.

Budmouth’s Lily Cherry and Wyke’s Sai Maganti top scored with eight points apiece with Cherry showing how well she is progressing by coming from two sets down to beat Maganti 3-2 in their clash.

The tie was decided by the doubles where Budmouth needed a 3-0 win to clinch a draw.

And after winning the first set that looked a possibility, however, Maganti and Shaun Beauchamp stepped their game up to seal the win with a 3-1 victory.

The following night, Wyke played host to their closest rivals for the title, Land Registry.

This turned out to be an absolute classic that went on until late in the night.

Steve Jackson scored the maximum nine points to set up the narrowest of 20-19 wins for his Land Registry team.

Jackson is currently one of the league’s most clinical performers in division so far, and he showed his class on the night in helping his side to a precious victory.

The very first match saw Maganti go down 3-2 for the second singles match in a row, as Jackson narrowly got the better of him.

The rest of the singles matches were shared with Wyke holding a slender 18-17 lead going into the crucial doubles match.

Maganti and Steve White won the first set but Jackson, along with Andy Millar, won three straight sets to pull of a magnificent victory.

With Budmouth C not playing this week, Budmouth B stretched their lead at the top of Division Two after a convincing 30-4 win over Springfield A.

Steve Rook, Steve Rockett and Pete Anderson all managed to get points for Springfield but they could not live with Budmouth, who continue their domination of the division.

The lack of matches in the league this week allowed Budmouth D to close the gap on All Saints and Wyke D at the top of Division Three.

They took on Pilgrims B and ran out 29-5 winners with Ken Winship supplying the only win on the night for Pilgrims with a close 3-2 victory over fast improving youngster Eddie Knell.
