JAY Lelliott was left wondering what if, after failing to climb the podium on day one of the British Swimming Championships.

The Portland youngster soared into the men’s 400m freestyle final by touching home in a time of 3mins 50.21secs in his morning heat.

However, despite lowering his time to 3:49.55 in the final, it was not enough to see Lelliott get in the medals as he finished sixth, almost three seconds off bronze.

And Lelliott admitted that he felt he had more left in the tank.

“I felt great in the water but I didn’t quite have that in the final, I’ve been doing some drill work to try and get used to my stroke again and it’s been a bit topsy turvy,” he said.

“I said I wanted to go sub 3:50 because I haven’t had the best opportunities, the pool situation hasn’t been great and I haven’t done any long course training.

“That is nothing to complain about though because it is going to happen. I’m not going to make excuses.

“I’m still happy with that time. It was the last 100m, I think if I had gone for it this morning I could have got a sub 47.”

All is not lost for Lelliott however, as he targets success in a range of events throughout the week.
