BELLE CONSTRUCTION 27 FITNESS WORLD 23

FITNESS took an early lead following a few timely interceptions, however Belle quickly found their form and scored seven unanswered goals to end the first quarter with a lead of four.

The defensive pairing of Becky Cousens and Laura Pearson worked well together to try and keep Belle shooters Jo Peters and Jazz Franklin away from the post.

But Belle were shooting well and continued to extend their lead, though Fitness’ Shelly Stevens and Kirsty Winning linked up in mid-court well to find some promising positions. Belle finished the first half leading 15-7.

Belle then brought Marnie McCombe into wing-defence and that helped the flow of the game from the defending third.

Fitness’ defenders upped their game in the third quarter with Belle only scoring three times, but Belle defenders Lou Bugler and Kelly Browne put pressure on their opponents and that meant for a low scoring period all round.

Great feeds by Belle’s Jo Peters allowed goal-shooter Leanne Holmes to convert and, despite Fitness maintaining their pressure, Belle held on to their advantage until the final whistle.

BUILDRITE 15 BOHO BEARS 46

BOHO shooter Annie Usher scored at every opportunity early on but her side only led by three at the end of the first quarter.

Despite Buildrite’s strong defensive pairing of Laura Osborne and Becci Nutman, Boho extended their lead to 11 as they consistently found their shooters in space.

Boho then made some tactical changes with goal-attack Laura Bucke switching positions with Annie Usher.

Umpires Sue Lee and Becky Hallett controlled the game well despite the quick pace and Buildrite were still determined to regain possession, however, Boho defenders Amelia Stout and Lauren Leatherland made crucial interceptions.

Fatigue set in for both teams towards the end of the final quarter making play a lot scrappier, but Boho took a well-deserved win.

WATERSIDE 47 AUTOBITZ 41

BOTH attacking pairings started fiercely, determined to get their team off to the best start in what promised to be a close game between the top two teams.

Waterside defenders Rachel Kilby and Kiera Boardman stepped up to the plate to match the Autobitz attack.

Autobitz’s Kirsty Hill and Zara Lau got the ball into their shooters using strong overhead passes, but by the halfway stage Waterside had extended their advantage to 25-19.

Waterside’s Ali Holmes and Carolyne McKay-Haigh swapped positions for the third quarter and that worked to their advantage.

The Autobitz shooters struggled slightly to find the net, though they did manage to reduce the deficit in the final quarter before Waterside clinched a 47-41 victory.

CRESTA LEISURE 28 GW ELECTRICAL 42

THIS match began evenly with both teams making interceptions throughout the court.

Although Cresta bossed possession early on, GW shooters Denise Meyers and Hayley Rooks were regularly on target at the net.

Cresta changed their line-up in the second quarter and GW took advantage of this, pulling away and taking a five-goal lead by the end of it.

Despite an injury to goal-keeper Elaine Sanderson, GW kept Cresta shooters Ali Sperring and Sue Woolley quiet and extended their lead to 10.

Cresta were consistent throughout, scoring seven or eight goals in every quarter, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with GW.
