WEYMOUTH windsurfer Nick Dempsey is aiming for victory when he takes part in the Olympic Test Event in Guanabara Bay in August.

With just over a year to go to the Rio 2016 Games, Dempsey was named among the British Sailing Team’s selections in Rio.

The London 2012 silver medallist will race in the RS:X windsurfing class at the Aquece Rio International Regatta (August 15-22), which is the second official Test Event for the sport of sailing and a key dress rehearsal at the 2016 venue.

Dempsey said: “It’s obviously a very important event it’s a really massive part of campaigning for the Olympics to get out there a year early and have that chance of a dry run so very happy and good to be part of our team.

“Obviously the more time we can spend in a venue the better, especially Rio it’s very difficult, very tricky tidal and surrounding by mountains.

“The local knowledge thing is a big deal so we want to get out there as early as we can and spend as much time there as possible.

“As soon as you get selected for the Pre-Olympic team it’s the only time in the Olympic cycle that the team becomes so small.

“You just have 15 sailors and from my past experience when you get that really small team, the team sort of comes together a little bit more, bonds a little bit better than when the whole team is massive, so from a team perspective it is really good and it’s nice to be in that bubble a year out.

“My goal at the test event is to do as well as possible, I’m sailing well again and making some big gains.

“I am hoping to medal there if not win, it’s all preparation for next year where obviously I want to win.”

Selections were based on results at a range of international regattas, with final decisions still to be made in the coming weeks in the Laser and RS:X Women’s events.

RYA Olympic manager Stephen Park said that this summer’s event marks an important milestone in the team’s preparations towards Olympic success in one years’ time.
