PORTLAND swim star Jay Lelliott missed out on a third medal at the World University Games in South Korea today.

The 20-year-old finished fourth in the final of the men’s 1500m freestyle, coming home more than 10 seconds behind winner Ayatsugu Hirai of Japan.

Lelliott recorded a time of 15:07.84mins to miss out on bronze by around four seconds – Hirai’s Japanese team-mate Kohei Yamamoto was third with Ukrainian Sergii Frolov second.

Frolov claimed gold in the 800m earlier in the week, while Lelliott had clinched silver in that race before going one better in the 400m.

Hirai and Yamamoto started today's final quickly as Bath University student Lelliott settled into third place.

But as Hirai began to pull clear, Frolov joined Lelliott in the battle for the medals.

Those two then closed on Yamamoto before overtaking him and setting off in pursuit of Hirai.

However, Hirai found another gear and Yamamoto wasn’t behind Lelliott for long, going into third as Frolov made second his own.

Hirai was never going to be caught and he won in 14:56.10, Frolov was next in 15:02.81 and Yamamoto posted a time of 15:03.99.
