WESSEX Karate Academy hosted the Go-Ju Ryu Karate-do International (GKI) National Championships at Budmouth Sports College, with 30 of their members taking part in three different events.

The students competed in individual Kata (forms), individual Kumite (points sparring) and the three-man team Kata against GKI exponents from across the country.

Competitors were categorised by their grade in Kata and by gender and age in Kumite.

Students from the South Dorset-based dojo ended the day with 33 medals, winning gold in 10 of the 22 categories they were entered in, and added 10 silvers and 13 bronze medals.

Wessex Karate Academy runs classes in Weymouth, Dorchester, Portland and Milborne St Andrew, and students will next compete in the South Coast Regional Championships in October.

Seven members are currently training with the England team hoping to get a place at the World Championships in Okinawa, Japan next year.
