ALEX Jolliffe and Becky Raybould will be targeting medals at next month’s National Junior Championships following a successful campaign on the European stage.

The Weymouth cycling aces came away from the Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Athens with several promising performances behind them.

Jolliffe and Raybould helped Great Britain finish fourth in the medals table behind Russia, Germany and Poland.

The British team picked up four gold, five silver and three bronze medals, with one of those going to Jolliffe.

Competing in the men’s junior team sprint, Jolliffe, Joe Truman and Jack Carlin beat France in a ride-off for bronze to claim their country’s first medal of the event.

The trio, who were just 0.058 seconds off the national junior record, had made the minor final after placing fourth in qualifying with a time of 46.162secs.

France had been 0.243secs quicker than the Brits in qualifying over the 750m distance, but Jolliffe and his team-mates turned the tables when the two went head-to-head from bronze.

Jolliffe then went on to compete in the 1km time trial (four laps of the track) where he finished fourth and only missed out on a bronze medal by 0.027secs.

However, he set a time of 1:04.413mins which was two seconds quicker than his previous best, averaging a speed of 34mph.

Finally, Jolliffe raced in the Keirin and qualified for the minor final (positions 7-12) – he won the race and so finished seventh overall.

As for Raybould, she narrowly missed out on the medal finals in the junior women’s team pursuit.

The British team of Raybould, Grace Garner, Eleanor Dickinson and Megan Barker were fifth after qualifying with a time of 4:47.46mins.

She then rode in the 500m time trial, coming home in a creditable 14th place and importantly setting a new personal best of 37.742secs.

Raybould also competed in the scratch race where team-mate Dickinson picked up silver.

Both Jolliffe and Raybould gained valuable experience from the trip to Greece and they will look to build on their impressive displays when they go for gold at the nationals in Manchester on August 3.
