THE league’s youth co-ordinator, Andy Millar, made his league debut this week for table-topping Springfield A and contributed the full nine points in a convincing 30-2 win over Shipton Gorge A.

Terry Whitworth and Gil Roberts took a set each off of Millar to claim Shipton’s only points of the night while Thomas Babler kept his 100 per cent record.

Park District retain second place despite not playing and Budmouth A are in third after a tight 20-18 win over Budmouth B.

This was a close, tense and exciting match with some brilliant table tennis from all six players.

It was actually the losing side’s Ben Graham that top scored with nine points but it was Sam Millar’s 3-0 win over Moses Lewis that gave the A team an unassailable lead heading for the doubles.

Division Two has Preston B at its summit after they secured a 24-12 win over Springfield C.

Josh Harman and Derrick Smith continued their impressive form this season with nine and seven points respectively.

Steve Rook (7) scored well for Springfield but Harman, Smith and Peter Stopforth won the last three singles matches and with Harman and Smith teaming up for another strong doubles performance Preston ran out victors.

Springfield B are second after a strong 30-9 win over the youngsters of All Saints.

It was a good night for Paul Manvell, Gary Ayles and Paul Arnold with Ben Hannigan (5) top scoring for All Saints.

All three Springfield players had to grind out five set wins and the score in no way reflects the effort given by students. Shipton Gorge B sit third after a 26-11 victory over Wyke D.

This match started with two mammoth five set ties which Derek Wheeler and Graham Albertella both pinched for Shipton.

Peter Billingham secured the first three of his nine points for Shipton by beating Roger Walden 3-0 and, despite the best efforts of Tony Dobbs (8) for Wyke, Shipton ran out comfortable winners.

In the closest match of the week Preston C hosted Budmouth D at Westfield College.

Up-and-coming youngster Tom Lydford (9) top scored on the night to give Budmouth a narrow 13-12 lead with two singles matches remaining.

Dave Clegg edged out April Heasman to level the match 15-15.

Eddie Knell and Malcolm Smith had both lost their previous two ties so something had to give in the night's final singles match.

Knell upped his game to secure a 3-0 win which meant Preston required a 3-0 win in the doubles to rescue draw.

Knell and Lydford lost that doubles but sneaked the second set ensure a 19-18 victory.

Shipton Gorge Youth continue their strong start to the season and remain top of Division Three.

Their 23-12 victory over STEPS M means they have won three matches on the spin now with Joachim Wood and Patrick Harper spearheading the latest victory with eight points apiece.

Top scorer on the night was Mike Hall from STEPS with a full nine points and he topped off the evening by teaming up with Martin Singer to also win the doubles.

Springfield D suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of hard-hitting second-placed Shipton Gorge C. Dave Poole was in scintillating form and was ably backed up by Dan Corren and John Newman.

Dave Moth (7) topped scored for Springfield having beaten Newman in straight sets and taking both Poole and Corren the full distance but ultimately Shipton ran out easy 27-8 winners.

Pilgrims B got their season's second success with a 20-13 win over the girls of Budmouth E.

Rosa McKechnie got Budmouth off to a great start with a five set win over old campaigner Richard Ellerby. April Heasman hit a full nine points without losing a set but Pilgrims proved too strong with Ellerby (5), Alec Bailey (6) and Barry Thomas (6) scoring well.
