WIMBORNE WAYFARERS II 0 WEYMOUTH LADIES II 1

JODIE Stone scored the only goal of the game to help secure victory for Weymouth Ladies.

The visitors were the dominant team and came out fighting right from the start.

Stone made some great runs leading to Weymouth being awarded their first short corner of the match.

This was received by Claire Harding at the top of the D.

She made a good connection but a Wimborne player blocked the ball and cleared the dan- ger.

Weymouth maintained the pressure towards the opposing team’s D with Olivia Treadwell and Stone playing some great two-touch hockey down the right-hand side of the pitch, while Alice Furness created further options in the centre midfield.

Weymouth continued to attack really well and were awarded their second short corner of the match.

This was received by Harding again and Jemma Brunell slapped the ball towards goal, but it was blocked by Wimborne’s keeper.

Weymouth began to get tired in the last five minutes of the first half, allowing Wimborne to press and make a couple of breaks.

However, defenders Bernie John and Carolyn Schofield held strong and didn’t let Wimborne take advantage.

In the seconds before the interval, Weymouth’s Furness and Stone attacked up the middle but were unable to score.

In the second half, the Seasiders started strongly with some good runs down the left-hand side from Sarah Treadwell.

Sonya Hughes who was now playing up front made some good runs into the D and confidently controlled a ball back down to the ground after it had been deflected high.

However, Weymouth was still unable to score.

However, they did make the breakthrough when the Wimborne defenders were put under pressure which resulted in Olivia Culbreth making a great ball through to Stone who took it into the D and scored by pushing it past the Wimborne keeper.

The hosts tried to press harder but were unable to get past the strong Weymouth defend- ers.

Weymouth keeper Ellie Goff did not get to see much action on her debut because her team defended really well throughout.

Weymouth have an away fixture against Salisbury V next week.
