West Clubs Women’s League Channel Division Two

WEYMOUTH II 1 SWANAGE & WAREHAM II 0

A SOLITARY Jodie Stone goal saw Weymouth Seconds topple Channel Division Two leaders Swanage & Wareham at a cold and wet Redlands.

It was an evenly-contested game with end-to-end play resulting in opportunities for both sides to score.

However, despite a number of short corners for the hosts and visitors the match was 0-0 at half-time.

The second half started promisingly for the Seasiders with good link up play, most notably from Susie Stone, Jodie Stone and Claire Harding up the right side of the pitch.

Their combination play resulted in a short corner which would ultimately lead to the winning goal.

Weymouth capitalised on this opportunity with excellent control and passing in the Swanage & Wareham goalmouth between Susie Stone, C Thorne and Sonya Hughes.

Hughes’ strike on goal was deflected in by Jodie Stone, bringing a loud cheer from the supporters who had braved the bad weather.

Both sides received warnings regarding the five-metre rule, resulting in Weymouth losing two players for two minutes apiece after green card offences, while the visitors also lost one team member to the sinbin.

Swanage & Wareham fought until the end, forcing some excellent saves from Anna Neish and Ellie Goff.

They were supported by a solid Weymouth defence of Olivia Culbreth, Berni Johns and Carolyn Schofield throughout.

  • Weymouth Ladies Hockey Club trains on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm on the astroturf at Redlands and new players are always welcome.
