West Clubs Women’s League Premier Division 2B

ISCA III 0

WEYMOUTH LADIES 2

WEYMOUTH travelled to Exeter with quiet resolve to gain another three points and got their reward with two second-half strikes.

The game began with ISCA’s defence using the full width of the pitch giving the Weymouth attack the run-around.

Weymouth gradually came into the game and had a few chances in the first half but the ISCA goalkeeper made some superb interceptions and saves.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half when he Seasiders’ left midfielder Casey Foot found Lynda Drewitt out on the wing, who passed the ball to Emily Austin lurking on the top of the D.

Austin controlled it sweetly and hit a shot cleanly into the goal to open the visitors’ account.

Five minutes later, Drewitt intercepted an ISCA 16 yard hit-out, turned the advancing centre-back and reverse stick hit the ball into the bottom left-hand corner for Weymouth’s second.

ISCA produced a few counter-attacks but the Weymouth defence remained strong with goalkeeper Megan Eadon-Turner making a couple of great saves to keep a clean sheet.

The player of the match vote was widely split, indicating that it was very much a whole squad performance, with Casey Foot pipping it for showing grit and determination in midfield.

WEYMOUTH LADIES II 1

WIMBORNE WAYFARERS II 0

WEYMOUTH dominated the opening spell with both sides having short corners with neither side being able to convert these opportunities.

Susie Stone, Claire Harding and Jodie Stone combined well on the Weymouth right to cause the Wimborne defence many problems.

The visitors’ defence was organised and repelled many Weymouth attacks.

As the half wore on, both midfields fought to take control of the middle of the park, resulting in Wimborne winning their second short corner of the half, drawing a fine save from the Weymouth keeper Ellie Goff.

Surging runs by Issie Gilliver resulted in half chances for the Weymouth forwards Olivia Treadwell and Sonya Hughes.

Wimborne broke just before the half-time whistle but the Weymouth back line of Bernie John, Carolyn Schofield, Harding and Gilliver held firm to deny them, leaving the score 0-0 at the break.

After an influential halftime talk from coach Wayne Goff the hosts took to the field positively.

A fantastic drive up the left by Katie Ninham found Susie Stone, who set up yet another chance for the Weymouth forwards.

With Claire Thomasson’s dominance now growing in the centre of Weymouth’s midfield, she released Susie Stone with a fine pass allowing her to pass to Annalise Dive, who hit a powerful first- time strike into the visitors’ goal to make it 1-0, which was greeted with a roar from the supporters on the side line.

Wimborne were not done yet, winning a short corner late in the game, only to have the opportunity denied by the umpire for encroaching and dissent towards the official.
