WEYMOUTH 6 GOSPORT 1
WEYMOUTH face Surbiton from Surrey Division One in a play-off showdown in Southampton today.
A win will see them promoted to Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division Two after the Seasiders completed their season in second place in Hampshire Division One.
The hosts started confidently in their final home game of the season and soon took the lead after Patrick May put away the rebound after captain Steve Membury had his shot saved.
Gosport showed rare attacking intent to win a penalty corner, however, great reactions from Giles Broadhead on the goal-line prevented the visitors from scoring.
The Seasiders started to control the game, but struggled to get past the visiting goalkeeper who made some excellent saves.
That was until a great run from Dan Bowles through the midfield led to him finding Andy Stiles on the baseline who finished confidently from a tight angle.
After half-time, Weymouth pressed forward in greater numbers and won a penalty corner.
From the well-worked routine, Bowles scored with a powerful shot past the keeper.
More goals were soon to follow for Weymouth with Matt Underhill deflecting in from May’s cross and Ben Skidmore scoring after a breakdown in Weymouth’s penalty corner routine.
Gosport did not go down without a fight, and after a quick break, scored from a penalty corner.
The home side finished on a high with Aaron Wilkinson scoring from short range in the last few minutes to close out the season.
