BERNIE Lloyd from Seaton came out on top at the 44th Chesil Championships, hosted by West Bay Sea Angling Club.

Lloyd landed two dogfish and an undulate ray for a total of 3kg 924g.

West Bay’s top angler Adam Cullingford was runner-up with five dogfish and third was Dave Lane, two smoothhounds and a dogfish.

Top lady on the day was club member Frances Kitchin who fished East Pier, West Bay, she caught five rockling for a weight of 580g.

Top junior was club member Jack Parkman with a dogfish for 645g.

Lloyd, Cullingford and Lane won their share of a very healthy super pool in addition to the top prize of £250 for the winner, £150 for second and £100 for third.

Cash prizes were awarded down to 10th position, there was also a healthy prize table for the top 10 anglers, top junior and top lady to pick from.

The flatfish pool was won by Dave Bennett with a plaice of 730g and the round fish pool was won by Lloyd with a undulate ray of 2kg 599g.

The competition was fished between Burton Bradstock in the west to Dragon’s Teeth, Abbotsbury to the east and this year included the East Pier at West Bay to accommodate those less able to fish the beaches.

The competitors enjoyed a wonderful day weather wise, with those not catching fish at least catching the sun.

After six hours of fishing, 28 anglers had managed to catch weighable fish. Species included plaice, dogfish ray, rockling and smoothound, all the smoothounds and rays were returned alive.

Total weight of fish caught was 49kg 373g.
