MELISSA McMahon became the Dorset County champion in the Dorset Ladies County Golf Association Championship, played at Came Down.

Starting off with 36 holes on Friday, McMahon warmed up to qualify for the knockout stage and on Saturday won through to the semi-finals which were played on Monday morning.

In the semis, McMahon didn’t hang about, getting birdies on the first five holes, the basis for a convincing six and five win.

In the afternoon final McMahon played Jane Southcombe and this was a closer game.

Southcombe’s short game and putting were good but McMahon’s powerful hitting and steady play allowed her to forge ahead and at two holes up on the dogleg 16th, McMahon closed the game down to win three and two and take the Huleatt Cup as county champion for the second year running.

At Lyme Regis, George Seed won the midweek stableford with 37 points ahead of Lewis Gibbons, 35 and Alfie Crisp, 34.

In the junior order of merit, Crisp and Gibbons upped their game and, along with Brad Searle all three finished under par. Crisp took the honours with a nett 66.

The ladies’ May medal was played in exceptionally strong winds and coping best with the elements was Gilly Madill with a 76 to win Division One, from Marilyn Wilson in second and Rosie Jackman in third.

Ronny Turner and Linda Richmand battled it out in Division Two with Turner taking first place on countback. Sandra Barclay was third.
