DISCUS star Holly Neill secured a bronze medal at the IPC European Championships in Grosseto, Italy, this evening.

The 27-year-old from Chantmarle, competing in the F40/41 women’s event, took third place with a throw of 22.24 metres behind Ireland’s Niamh McCarthy and winner Renata Sliwinska.

After opening up with an effort of 20.20m, Neill’s best throw came in the second round of the competition, where the distances recorded are converted into points.

McCarthy, also an F41 competitor, set a new European record with a whopping throw of 27.05m in the third round but that was not enough to overhaul F40 competitor Sliwinska, who achieved a lifetime best of 16.86m with her fourth attempt to beat her nearest competitor by 15 points.

Sliwinska’s victory goes with her gold in the women’s F41 shot put, which she won on Monday.

Neill’s third place means she adds to her medal collection, having also claimed bronze at the World Championships in 2013.
