WEYMOUTH Junior Netball Club (WJNC) ended their season on a high at their year-end presentation.

Awards were presented for most improved and players of the year.

Overall players of the year were awarded for the High 5 and Senior Sections.

In addition to this, special awards were presented in recognition for outstanding achievement and commitment to the club.

The club boasts a record number of members ranging from age eight to 18.

The aim for the team is to provide an insight into playing within a majority adult environment, and be a stepping stone to the next level of play within the local area.

Mel Dive, umpire for WJNC, once again scooped the overall umpire of the year award and Jess Pomeroy’s outstanding play was rewarded with the runner-up Division Two player of the year award.

The excellent play by the girls in the league has once again been recognised by the umpires and committee during the past year, having been nominated for the fair play and good conduct award at this year’s presentation .

WJNC has also had players in the past two seasons nominated for individual player of the year awards – Jodie Howell, Isabelle Roberts, Grace Goodwin and Jaimee Browne, and their umpires Lauren Leatherland, Annalise Dive and Mel Dive were once again up for awards.

The club’s players and coaching staff have also consistently been well represented in the England Netball Performance Pathway.

The Weymouth Satellite Academy for 2015/16 included 11 players from WJNC (Molly Frampton, Teisha Barrey, Evie Hambleton-White, Millie Hambleton-White, Jaimee Browne, Tia Chaloner, Isabel Jolliffe, Louise Robertson, Sana Iftikhar, Dana Shah, Grace Goodwin) and two of the club’s coaches – Kelly Browne and Lauren Leatherland.

In addition, Emily Conning was selected into the County Academy Squad and was then chosen to represent the county at a regional tournament.

Conning has more recently been joined by more WJNC players at the County Academy after a gruelling selection process of three screening sessions – Grace Goodwin, Skyla Erskine, Isabelle Roberts and Jessamy Baker.

The club also supports the progress of youth coaches and umpires and provides opportunities for those requiring assessment for Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Founder of WJNC, June Reed is keen for this to continue.

She said: “Lauren Leatherland is a prime example of how netball can be much more than just playing the game.

“At only 17, Lauren has progressed through the junior club and is now playing at the top of the Premier Division.

“She is a UKCC Level 1 coach and a qualified umpire and is using her skills to help her gain her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“Lauren’s dedication and commitment to the club was recognised in her nomination for the South West Region’s ‘Goalden Globe Awards’ which demonstrates how high she is regarded within the county.”

Chairman Kelly Browne, added: “The club continues to go from strength to strength.

“We have high quality coaching staff and a supportive parent committee.

“It is pleasing to see the successes of the girls, both past and present, in gaining places on the England Netball Performance Pathway, but at the heart of the club is the enjoyment and development of the current members.”
