AFTER beating Budmouth A last week, Budmouth B continued their unbeaten season with a comprehensive 30-2 win over Springfield B to remain top of Division One.

Ethan Gear, Jamie Blair (still with a 100 per cent record) and Will Joliffe all picked up maximums with Paul Manvill and Gary Ayles securing Springfield’s only points.

Budmouth A remain in second spot after beating YMCA 30-7. Tom Cherry dropped five legs and Moses Lewis dropped a leg to Brian Hansford but Ben Graham has now dusted off the cobwebs and was untroubled in his three wins.

The third maximum of the week was secured by Park District as they beat Preston B 30-3, which kept them within striking distance of top spot with a game in hand.

Josh Harman scored two of Preston’s points with Peter Stopforth the third.

The final match in Division One this week saw Red Triangle claim their third win of the season.

Tom Lydford (8) demonstrated his growing maturity by beating both Derrick Dawson and Mike Spracklen but couldn’t hit a maximum as he went down to Tony Reed 11-9 in the deciding leg of a hard-fought match.

Dawson then beat Shaun Beauchamp and April Heasman to claim an eight-leg haul but Beauchamp got the better of Spracklen (3-2) and Reed (3-0) to give the Budmouth C team a 14-point total but the overall strength of Red Triangle ensured a 24-14 win.

A cracking match at Shipton saw All Saints take the honours 23-17 to close the gap at the top of Division Two, Andy Millar being the difference between the two teams with a nine-point maximum.

Even where scores look a bit one-sided, most points were competitively and lengthily contested, usually at high speed.

The highlight was the match between Andy and Brian Cammell which Andy took 12-10 in the fifth.

Shipton came back from the dead in the doubles to win 3-2 having been two sets down and 6-0 in the fifth, winning that set 11-6.

Springfield C remain fourth despite losing heavily, 26-8, to Preston A. Alec Brown secured a maximum for Preston with Steve Rook scoring seven of Springfield’s points.

Three maximums from Tim Scott, Alun Chapple and Paul Beeston gave Pilgrims A a convincing 30-4 win over Preston C.

In a more closely-fought match, Colliton C managed their maiden win of the season in beating Wyke D 20-17.

Colliton’s Mark Whittingham was the only player to score the full nine points.

In Division Three, Mike Hall was the only STEPS player not to score the full nine points as they beat Wey Valley School 29-8.

In a week for teams scoring heavily, Springfield D continued this trend with a 30-7 win over Wey Valley TC.

The score is slightly flattering in that half of the matches went to four or five sets in a deceptively competitive fixture.

The young lads of Budmouth D secured a close victory over Pilgrims B.

Ben Howe continued his good form claiming a maximum but he had to recover after losing the first two legs to Barry Thomas and take the fifth leg 12-10.

The boot was on the other foot when Thomas took on Noah Drummond and Thomas came through a tight match 12-10 in the deciding leg. Richard Ellerby got the better of the improving Alex Taylor also winning the fifth leg 12-10. However, with Taylor beating both Ellerby and Alec Bailey 3-0 and Drummond picking up four useful legs, the youngsters prevailed 22-18.
