WEYMOUTH 5

HASLEMERE 1

WEYMOUTH’S losing streak was finally broken with an emphatic victory over Haslemere at Redlands.

The run had extended to five games before the game and the relief was plain to see among the team.

It was a flying start from the home side who took the lead within the first minute when Aaron Wilkinson picked up the ball from Simon Harvey and drove forward before slipping the ball into Steve Membury who slotted home.

Weymouth pushed forward for a second and missed some excellent chances for which they were punished when David Beaudro was deemed guilty of a stick tackle. Haslemere took their chance and flicked the ball past David Civil to make it 1-1 going into half-time.

It was an assertive start to the second half from the hosts who immediately pushed forward and took the lead when a well-drilled penalty corner saw Pay May put the ball past the Haslemere keeper.

The hosts then maintained the relentless pressure with Luke Drewitt going on a menacing run before playing the ball on to the defender’s foot, leading to a penalty corner which was duly converted as the ball reached Harvey at the back post who lifted the ball into the net.

Weymouth could sense blood at this point and got their fourth when captain Membury played the ball from the right wing, across into May’s path who slapped the ball home.

It was a dominant second half and the hosts capped a five-star performance when Harvey played a free hit down the line to Matt Underhill who beat a couple of players before slipping the ball into Teddy Ruxpin who smashed the ball home to make it 5-1.
