DIVISION One’s title is to head to a shoot-out at Budmouth College after both Park District and Budmouth B secured the maximum 30 points this week.

Park District will take on third place Budmouth A, with Budmouth B taking on Budmouth C on the adjacent table.

If Budmouth B score another maximum then this will leave Park needing 23 points to take the title in one of the closest run-ins in recent years.

Park’s maximum victory was a 30-2 win over Preston B. Roger Lovell scored both of Preston’s points in a 3-2 loss to Richard Willshere, having fought back from 2-0 down. Budmouth B hit their maximum against bottom team Springfield B with Chris Whitefield securing two points and Paul Manvell one. Manvell and Paul Arnold took the opening set of the doubles for their fourth and final point of the evening.

Red Triangle sit in fourth after a closely fought 23-22 win over Budmouth C. Incredibly, seven of the 10 ties went to the full five sets and Budmouth C managed to win five of these, but lost two of the other three ties heavily, which was ultimately their downfall.

Even Shaun Beauchamp’s maximum on the night was not enough to avoid the closest of defeats. Shipton Gorge A made the trip to Dorchester and came away with a 23-18 victory over Colliton X.

All but one of the ties went to four or five sets on a night that started well for Shipton with three straight 3-1 wins before Mick Hogan (7) secured Colliton’s first win by the same scoreline over Gil Roberts (7).

The match of the night was the closing doubles in which Colliton’s Andy Crouch (2) and Hogan came back from two sets down to sneak the third set 12-10 and then take the match in five.

Shipton Gorge B seem to have all but secured the Division Two title, but Preston A did their bit to keep up the pressure with a 25-14 win at Springfield C.

Preston had a good evening with Simon Green (9) and Alec Brown (8) showing fine form in some tight games. Steve Rockett (2) pushed Green hard in five sets and Pete Anderson (5) was involved in two five-setters, including the doubles with Steve Rook (4), winning both 3-2.

Down at the other end of the division, Colliton C remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 24-12 loss to Wyke D. Andy Ray (5), Jim Chamberlain (4) and Mark Whittingham (3) fought hard in some tight sets but were ultimately overpowered by their opponents with Tony Dobbs scoring a maximum on the night for them.

STEPS have secured the Division Three title but they are showing no mercy in victory with a 30-7 win over Wey Valley School.

The youngsters had a tough evening against the experienced champions. Thomas Wheeler (4) top scored for Wey Valley with Ethan Bingham (2) also securing points.

Springfield D ended their campaign as runners-up after a narrow 18-16 win over Wey Valley Tennis Centre. Before the doubles it was 15-14 in favour of Springfield but they lost the first two legs and were match points down in the third. A stirring fight back from the Woods then produced an exciting finish and an 18-16 victory to close a most enjoyable season. Third place is still up for grabs and STEPS M did their chances no harm with a 30-6 win over Preston D.

Budmouth E secured their best win of the season with a 25-11 victory over Wyke C. Rosa McKechnie continued to show her growing talent with a maximum but was ably supported by both Jaimee Browne (6) and Ella Stanton (7). They will be a team to watch next season.
