PARALYMPIC athlete Paul Blake is confident that his achievements in last week’s Grand Prix event can propel him to glory in this summer’s World Championships in London.

The Dorchester ace achieved two golds and one silver medal in the event in Dubai, and despite working towards a brand new event, he says everything is on track for success.

He said: “The reason I did sprints instead of the usual 400m and 800m was because of scheduling at the World Championships.

“I’m competing on the Friday night at 10.30pm and then the next morning at 11.30am is the 800m final, so there’s no time at all to recover.

“If it stays like that then it’ll probably be 200m and 400m that I’m doing in London, but if it changes I’ll hopefully get the chance to defend my title in the 800m.

“That’s why I went to Dubai to do some sprints, which was good fun but I’m not really used to it.

“The sole reason for going over there was to see how the training was going really.

“I was really happy to come away with the win. I wasn’t expecting any medals so it was a nice surprise.

“I’m not really much of a sprinter so to come away with two golds was a huge confidence boost and I’ll only get quicker as the season progresses.”

Despite the additional challenge of training for a new event, Blake is confident that his preparations will set him up for success come the summer’s World Championship.

He said: “The training is going to plan. I’ve had no injuries and my coach and I have set out some sort of plan and hopefully it’ll all go together.

“There’s a few domestic competitions coming up so I’m just going to be trying to get in as many races as I can before the Championships in London, then we have a two-week training plan before it begins, so that’s perfect preparation for me.

“Im more than capable of doing it, it’s just making sure everything goes to plan in the build up.”
