DORCHESTER Bowls Club saw the climax of its indoor season, which concluded with a couple of big surprises.

In the men’s singles, indoor captain Brian Paulson took on Ged Costello, who, despite taking a lead, allowed Costello back into the game to get a 21-12 victory.

The ladies’ singles, however, was not as straightforward. Julie Corbin raced into a 14-5 lead after 11 ends, before Freda Yates responded by scoring 12 unanswered to lead 18-14 with just two ends to play, but from nowhere Corbin found a response to take the game with a score of 21-18.

In the under-25s’ final, George Spracklen took an early lead over Louise Woodrow to make the score 19-12, before Woodrow launched a remarkable comeback to win the game by 21-19.

Woodrow continued this momentum by beating George Maslen 21-5 in the under-18 singles final. However, Maslen also had an excellent weekend, first defeating Keith Kellaway 21-9 in the novice singles, before winning the under-16s competition by two sets to nil against Joseph Aslett, who became the youngest player ever to make a club final at Dorchester.

Both singles sets play matches needed tie-breaks to separate the players.

In the ladies’ Jan Meyers won the first set 11-3 and was leading 5-4 playing in the final end of the second, before Julie Corbin scored a three to force a tie-break, which Corbin won 2-1.

In the men’s sets, Leigh Corbin suffered a similar fate when Ted Flatters sealed the victory by taking the tie-break 2-0.

In the pairs’ matches, the competition was just as fierce. Mother and daughter pairing Barbara Lacey and Emma Follis played convincingly to win the ladies’ pairs with a 24-11 win over Melissa Makepeace and Louise Woodrow.

In the men’s pairs, Bob Trantor and skip Ged Kelly won 20-13 against Colin Gifford and Leigh Meyers, while Melissa Makepeace and Eddie Young came back from a 9-6 deficit to win 23-16 in the mixed pairs.

In the novice drawn triples, Ann Wareham (subbing for Pippa Knight), Keith Kellaway and Linda Burton kept their nerve superbly, scoring five shots in the final two ends to win 17-14 against Roger Dobbs, Tony Jenkins and James Roe at the end of a fine game of bowls.

Finally, the team of Colin Gifford, Jan Meyers and Leigh Meyers took a comfortable 21-4 victory in the open triples' final, beating Eddie Young, Frank Gwatkin and Phil Hallet after just 12 ends.

This saw a superb weekend of bowls concluded, with special thanks going to the markers Ros Gwatkin, Frank Gwatkin, Isabelle Addision, Sue Maggs and Linda Hill.
