FOUR trophies were awarded to two Weymouth badminton teams in the West Dorset Badminton Mixed League (WDBL) this season.

Both teams, who play their home games at Redland Community Sports Hub, collected their silverware at the WDBL presentation night at Cerne Abbas village hall.

Weymouth Network won the Division One title for a third season in succession during a dominant campaign, winning 13 of their 14 games and finishing with 214 points.

Captain Richard Brown led his side to glory alongside team-mates Liz Osborne, Moira Bellingham, Nathan Stroud, Alison Norris, John Sedwards, Helen Webb and Paul Ormes.

Elsewhere, Osborne and Ormes went on to clinch the veterans’ tournament title.

WeySports entered a team into the ‘four-two’ league for the first time last season and won convincingly.

Comprised of one division featuring five teams with four men and two ladies each, the league was topped by the Weymouth-based team who claimed seven wins from eight games, scoring 123 points.

Skipper Charlie Squibb captained the side, which also included Damien Harding, Simon Rose, Hannah Goram, Jon Kitchin and Stroud.

Weysports also enjoyed a 100 per cent record in the knockout cup, beating Cerne Abbas 371-352 at Westland Sports Centre, Yeovil in the final.

Goram, Squibb and Kitchin were also part of the triumphant cup team, alongside captain Ruth Dean and Rose.

Weymouth Shuttlebusters youth players Eddie Knell and Sophie Suter had reason to celebrate as the duo won the WDBL ‘Nigel Miller’ Junior Tournament in January.
