WEYMOUTH’S veteran 1,500m athlete Kevin Archer finished sixth after running in the European Masters Championships for Great Britain at the European Masters Track and Field Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

Although being one of the oldest competitors in the age-group, he made the final and claimed sixth place out of16 finalists, being first of the three Great Britain athletes home.

Archer said: "Twenty four had originally entered, and it was unusual that 24 lined-up in the two semi-finals – there’s almost always 20-30 per cent who don’t make it to the Championships – especially in the older age-groups.

"In contesting European Masters finals at four distances over the years, I am pleased to say I have filled all the positions from second to seventh but never any further back.

"On the flip side, unfortunately I've not won – yet!

"I failed in my other aim, to run a season’s best (under 4:55.8mins) or close to the British best time of 4:50.21. My time in the final was 4:56.21.

"However, that still gives me confidence for next year because it was slightly faster than the winning time of the next age-group M65-69, which I move into next summer, and I hope to be much more ‘race fit’ – these champs being only my third and fourth races this season."
