WELLWORTHY are punching above their weight in the South Dorset League.

The club's men's B team beat Portland Borstal away by a score of 59-56 overall.

Played with three teams of four players on each rink, Wellworthy’s top quartet was on the island club's rink two.

Skipped by Graham Parker, with Jack Goward as lead, Ron Pardoe as number two and Steve Living as three, they won 25-19.

Another Wellworthy four, skipped by captain Dave Hicks, with Dave Clark as lead, Jim Greatrex and Tony Batty, they triumphed 17-13, while rink four saw Portland Borstal’s quartet win 24-17.

So Wellworthy picked up eight points to Portland’s two for the overall win.

However, Wellworthy ladies haven’t been so fortunate lately.

After an excellent season last year, the county team were promoted from Division Two to Division One, where they have been finding the going a little tougher.

Nonetheless, they are gradually finding their way and have had two tight matches recently.

The Wellies hosted Bridport A and won on two rinks.

Skip Chris Pavey, lead Daphne Gale, Di Stone and captain Ena Hicks got off to a flying start and were 11-1 up after seven ends.

Then Bridport A started to fight back making it 19-19 with one end to go. But Wellworthy held on to win the last end by two making the final score 21-19.

Meanwhile, Skip Sheena Willis, lead Carol Dixon, June Gillespie and Pam Skinner eventually romped home after losing the first end by four.

By the 11th end, Wellworthy were 15-11 up. Then Bridport failed to score for eight ends, going 31-11 down but rallying in the last two ends to make the final score 31-14 to the Wellies.

However, all was lost on rink four, where despite starting off evenly, the score being 5-5 after six ends, Bridport A stormed away to complete a 34-12 rout after 21 ends.

This meant the overall score was 67-64 to Bridport A. So although Wellworthy Ladies won two out of three rinks, they lost overall by 6-4 on points awarded.

The first Ladies' county match in August was even tighter though. Wellworthy played away to Dorchester A.

Now when you consider that Dorchester has more lady members than the entire Wellworthy membership, it is no mean feat for Wellworthy to be competitive against county town team.

On this occasion, Wellworthy lost on two rinks (23-16) and (16-13) after a poor start on both rinks but the same team Chris Pavey skipped and won against Bridport A maintained their early lead throughout eventually winning 26-16 against Dorchester.

So with two losses by two and one win by 10, the match ended in a 55-55 draw.

So Dorchester A gained six points overall to Wellworthy's four.
