THE Wellworthy Club Finals were played out over a glorious August Bank Holiday weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, a competitive ladies' singles final took place between experienced bowler Chris Pavey and Carol Dixon, who only started playing bowls last year.

Singles matches are generally won by the first player to score 21 and as most people expected.

Pavey went ahead and looked like she would cruise to a comfortable win. She was winning 7-2 after six ends, went 12-6 ahead after 12 ends and was 16-10 up after 18 ends.

But that’s where her game stalled. As Pavey faded away in the hot afternoon sunshine, Dixon took full advantage, drawing level after 21 ends at 16-16, before finishing with a two on the 26th end to win 22-16.

Earlier in the week, Wellworthy Ladies hosted Westmoor A Ladies from East Dorset in a County Division One match.

The Wellies drew on one rink but won on the other two.

Rink six saw Jenny Clark, Di Stone, Ena Hicks and Chris Pavey come from 5-0 down to go up 13-5 after 10 ends.

Then Westmoor fought back taking the next three ends to make score 13-12.

Wellworthy soared ahead again to go 20-12 after 17 ends but Westmoor rallied again to make it 20-18 going into the 21st and last end.

Here they were holding a winning lie of three until Pavey reduced it to wo to make the final score a draw at 20-20.

Meanwhile on rink four, Wellworthy were only able to field three ladies – Carol Dixon, Pam Skinner and Sheena Willis.

Still they came from behind at 12-5 down after nine ends to run away with the match 23-13.

Wellworthy were however, penalised for being a player short and had to forfeit 25 per cent of their points.

So the final score was reduced to 17-13 but was still a win.

In between on rink five, Liz Stead, Jean Brian, Jean Burnett and Linda Phipps were a few points ahead right from the start, going 5-0 up after three ends.

After that it was a hard-fought game until the 16th end, when the score was 15-12, but then Wellworthy sailed away to make the final score 22-13.

So the overall score, even after Wellworthy’s points reduction on rink four, was Wellworthy 59 to Wellworthy.

With wo points for each rink won, one for the draw and four for the overall win, Wellworthy Ladies won 9-1.
