GAME week two of the Weymouth Volleyball League, sponsored by the Ghurka restaurant, saw teams in all divisions battling it out to get in pole position for the season’s first promotion which takes place after tonight’s fixtures.

Perhaps the tie of the round was Weatherbury Warriors B versus Diggers With Attitude in Division Two.

Weatherbury B started strongly and were looking comfortable only to lose the second set to a rejuvenated Diggers.

The next two sets were tightly fought with point for point exchanges taking it to 2-2.

However, Weatherbury refocused to take the maximum points closing the final set out 15-11.

This sets up a winner-takes-all match this week against Old Spa with the winner getting promoted to Division One for the second ranking round.

Old Spa, who saw Carl Neal return to the fore, beat SYNT three sets to nil.

While SYNT’s passing and setting was accurate they could not find a way to kill the attack.

In comparison, Old Spa swung well with Hayden Francis particularly impressive through the middle.

In Division One, top-of-the-table Portland Prison carried on their good form to beat CSSC Wildcats three sets to nil.

Unlike last week’s game, Prison were able to field a team, handing a debut to Jake Hetherington.

Hetherington impressed as he negated the power of Wildcats’ big hitters Rob Semmence and Mark Johnson with some good blocking.

He was backed up well by man of the match Jules Stout who also put some good hits in to ensure Prison took the tie.

In the other game, Weatherbury A lost out to Parkers.

Weatherbury who are still adjusting to a new set-up inspired by the Weymouth South West League team showed moments of promise but the experienced Parkers team shone though with Elliot Sawyer and Neil Aplin combining well.

In Division Three, ASM beat a depleted Ultraballers side 3-0.

Most valued player for ASM was Jon Boyd. For Ultra it was Connaire Skerritt who battled valiantly despite an influx of pressure.

Following this game, Renegades beat Meerkats 3-0 in a game with youth on both sides of courts.

Ben Hunter again impressing for Meerkats but being pipped to MVP by Fred Dart and for Renegades 13-year-old Joshua Pearson was deemed his team’s best player.

This week’s all-important fixtures will see teams relegated or promoted for the first time under the league’s new format.

In the top division, any of the teams except Portland Prison could go down.

In the second division, one match will be for promotion and the other will be a relegation battle although Diggers With Attitude may still stay up with a tight loss. In Division Three, all eyes will be on the Renegades versus Team ASM game with the winners joining Division Two for the next seeding round.
