WEYMOUTH bowls ace Martin Puckett has won the grand final of the Open Singles Circuit at Potters Resort in Norfolk.

Puckett, of Weymouth’s Moonfleet 2000 club, contested the final against Jordan Philpott of Spalding, Lincolnshire and ran out a 2-0 winner in sets in a game full of extraordinary drawing shots to bring home the winner’s cheque of £1,400.

The Weymouth man’s win also hands him qualification to the World Indoor Bowls Championship at Potters Resort in January, an event televised on BBC television.

Thirty-two players qualified for places in the grand final by accruing points from playing in the 20 Open Singles competitions held around the country during the year.

At the Moonfleet Open in October, Puckett was knocked out in the semi-final by fellow member Chris Cook.

The final 32 are spilt into eight groups, with the winners of each group decided after a round robin. The two top players from each group then play a knockout format to decide the champion.

Puckett has been playing at Moonfleet 2000 since he was eight years old, just after the club’s bowls hall was built on the Marsh playing fields.

Saturday mornings and is an inspiration to a number of young players who are following in his footsteps.

Puckett was a member of England’s junior team for seven years, was a finalist in 2016 for the under-25s World Indoor Championship, and has just been selected for the English Senior International team for the fourth season.

The Moonfleet 2000 Indoor Bowls Club caters for everyone from ages of 8 to 80+ including those with disabilities and the next open day where the public can come and have a try at playing bowls is on Saturday, February 3 from 10am to 4pm.
