WEYMOUTH LADIES 2

CHIPPENHAM 6

WEYMOUTH Ladies suffered a 6-2 defeat to unbeaten table toppers Chippenham in their West Clubs Women’s League East Division clash at Redlands.

After a four-week break due to half-term, frozen pitches and snow, the league leaders came out solidly and Weymouth found themselves 3-0 down after 20 minutes despite having chances.

Weymouth dug deep and soon pulled one back with Amanda Harvey placing a nifty pass from defence to Lynda Drewitt on the halfway line. Drewitt turned and fended off a tackle to pass out wide to the right wing.

Emily Austin made one of her strong trademark meandering runs down the right wing and hit a perfect cross to the centre of the D for Drewitt to sweep into the goal.

Just before half-time, Weymouth earned a short corner which was injected by Anneka Bowles, stopped by Gina Brown and Austin slipped the ball to the left for Harvey to time a powerful strike into the back of the net.

In the second half, Weymouth still had strong attacking spells but were unable to convert any of their chances. They were punished when Chippenham scored two more goals from well-rehearsed short-corner routines.

Their sixth came from a tap-in on the far post after Weymouth keeper Megan Eadon made another amazing save from the initial shot, but unfortunately the ball rebounded to a waiting forward.
