WEYMOUTH LADIES 2

SALISBURY LADIES SECONDS 1

WEYMOUTH Ladies started dynamically and soon took an early 1-0 lead with Susie Stone dropping the ball to Anneka Bowles to slap the ball decisively into the corner of the goal to give them the opener in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League East Division.

After more persistent drives, a second goal came within four minutes with a wonderful cross from Emily Austin to Lynda Drewitt in front of goal who powered the ball into the net to make it 2-0 at half time.

Second half saw flurries of snow and Weymouth didn’t keep the pace up which allowed Salisbury back into the game.

Weymouth were just having one of those days where they couldn’t keep possession or get their angles right, eventually letting Salisbury pull a goal back. Weymouth persevered and dug deep but succeeded with a 2-1 win.

GILLINGHAM 2

WEYMOUTH LADIES SECONDS 1

WEYMOUTH travelled to second-placed Gillingham in the Channel Division One on a cold and snowy Saturday but their opponents started strong, with several attacking breaks which saw the Weymouth defence under pressure for the initial stages of the game.

Gillingham won three short corners in quick succession and in each case they had goals disallowed due to the height of the strikes from the top of the D with each one bravely faced by the away side's defence.

Weymouth were able to break down some of this play and had opportunities to break into Gillingham’s D on numerous occasions but unfortunately they were not able to convert the play into a goal.

Gillingham were quick to capitalise on any breaks from this play, which ultimately led to two goals being scored by the home team in the first half.

After a rousing team talk by the senior players of Weymouth at half time, Weymouth approached the second half with belief and a notable improvement in their game.

With the majority of the play in Weymouth’s favour for the second half, several short corners were won but unfortunately Weymouth failed to convert them into goals.

However, some great link up play between the midfielders and forwards saw a window of opportunity for Julia May who pounced quickly to score from open play.

The final embers of the game were played with passion by both teams, with Weymouth fighting to take something away from the game until the final whistle.
